Lizzo brought tears to everyone’s eyes when she posted a touching video of gifting her mom a new car for Christmas.
In the video, posted on Instagram, Lizzo leads her mother, Mellissa Jefferson, out to the driveway. When Jefferson spots the brand-new Audi — complete with a big red bow on the hood — she breaks down crying: “You see these things on television and you never expect this to happen to you.”
Lizzo noted: “Got my mommy a brand new Audi for Xmas 🎄I remember crying in my car when my daddy passed, no job no money nowhere to live, wishing I could one day provide for my family.. I couldnt do it for my dad so ima make sure I spoil Mama. Happy holidays y’all.”
In January, Lizzo told “CBS This Morning” about how deeply father’s death affected her. She had been a student at the University of Houston but dropped out soon after he died.
“I kind of really gave up,” she said. “I was depressed. I didn’t have a purpose, like I didn’t feel like I had a purpose for being a musician or anything. So that turned into, ‘Oh can I sleep on your couch,’ and that eventually, I got really guilt-ridden. So all I had was this car. It was a Subaru.”
“That was my home for a little. I spent Thanksgiving in that car, and I remember I cried myself to sleep.”
Lizzo finally pulled herself together: “I used everything that happened to me and made myself stronger.”
